Lecture: Eric Ravilious and the White Horses of Wiltshire

Eric Ravilious travelled far and wide, but no landscape inspired him more than the chalk downs of southern England. Intrigued by the figures and white horses carved into the hills, he painted a series of pictures intended as the basis for a children's book.

The White Horses book was never produced, but his 'dummy' of the book, lost for decades, was recently been purchased by the Wiltshire Heritage Museum. James Russell’s illustrated talk will explore these paintings, teasing out stories and revisiting places that inspired this extraordinary artist. Ravilious, painter, book illustrator, designer of transfer-ware pottery and Official War Artist, is now one of the most popular artists of his period.

Rare Ravilious prints found down side of bed

Five rare lithograph prints of submarines by official war artist and former Great Bardfield resident Eric Ravilious - found pushed down the side of a bed in north London – are being auctioned in Stansted next week.

Ravilious Study Day at the Victoria & Albert Museum

This display features works on paper from the collections by the versatile mid 20th century artist and designer Eric Ravilious. Shown alongside his distinctive watercolour Train Landscape are WWII watercolours and lithographs, a series of wood engravings and pieces from a Wedgwood dinner service, designed by Ravilious in 1937.

Illustrated Talk at the Rye Arts Festival by author James Russell, 21 September 2012 at 3.00 pm

Paul Nash and his student Eric Ravilious, the 70th anniversary of whose death is being celebrated this year, are amongst the finest of our British landscape painters. These roving painters both found tremendous inspiration on the coast and in the countryside around Rye.

In this entertaining illustrated talk, author James Russell will explore the work of both artists going behind the scenes of his favourite paintings .
